bluetooth speakers

The Vifa Copenhagen wireless speaker ($600) is somewhat large for a wireless, portable speaker. Its squareish size and long top handle are reminiscent of a boom box, brief case, or big lunch box. But unlike those everyday products, the Copenhagen is almost entirely covered in earthy, colorful fabric. This makes sense, since it’s lauded as an example of Nordic design, and one thing we all know about the North Atlantic region is that it’s cold. So why not wrap your speaker in a comfy sweater?

Whether you decide to purchase a Copenhagen, therefore, is going to depend almost entirely on how you feel about the way it looks. If you think the speaker sounds great, but you don’t like its shape, fabric or color options, you’re still unlikely to buy it. If you love the way it looks, you’re going to be somewhat willing to overlook a less than ideal sound.

WIRED

So, good news! The Copenhagen sounds good. Packing six individual drivers (two tweeters, two midrange drivers, and two woofers) into one unit, the Copenhagen weighs more than ten pounds. That’s heavy for a wireless speaker, but which suggests that its sound will hold together at higher volumes. And it does; the Copenhagen sounds quiet and clear at high and low volumes, and the sound is smooth from the low end to the high end. There is nothing distinctly or instantly memorable about the Copenhagen’s audio quality, but that’s OK. This is a solid, more than competent speaker. If you like the way the speaker looks, you’ll be happy with the way it sounds.

Most people will stream audio to the Copenhagen over Wi-Fi or Bluetooth, but it also supports Optical and a direct USB connection just in case, and it’s compatible with AirPlay and DLNA. Even with those connection options, the speaker doesn’t try to do too much with connectivity. Many of its peers are overloaded with connectivity features. It’s a bit of an arms race, and it just makes those speakers harder to setup and manage. The Copenhagen very simply plays audio from your mobile device or computer, and that’s all most people will ever really need, anyway.

TIRED

Even though the Copenhagen is shaped similarly to a small beat box, its high-end fabric ensures this isn’t a music player you’re going to take outside unless you’re relaxing on the patio. So while it’s legitimately a portable speaker, its use as such is somewhat limited. And because it’s larger than a typical portable speaker, you’re going to have to make room for it indoors on your bookshelf, or table top or side table. So choose your color wisely. Whether it’s on display or shoved into a corner, it’s going to stand out in your house.

RATING

7/10 – Beautiful design, great sound, but there are limits to its portability.
